Tips for Your Communications Job Search
Tailor your resume to each specialization
Public relations, internal communications, and crisis roles each look for different signal words. Swap in the exact language from the job posting, whether that's 'media relations,' 'employee engagement,' or 'executive communications,' so your resume clears automated screening.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Hiring managers in communications expect writing samples, press releases, or campaign recaps. Compile three to five pieces that show range, include context on the audience and goal for each, and host them somewhere you can share a single clean link.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists communications openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target employers with established comms functions
Organizations large enough to have a dedicated communications team, such as hospital systems, advocacy groups, or publicly traded companies, post more roles and offer clearer career paths than those where the function sits inside marketing or HR.
Prepare a crisis or issue management example
Nearly every communications interview asks how you handled a reputational or sensitive situation. Draft a concise story using the situation, your specific actions, and the measurable outcome before your first screening call, not after.
Negotiate on title when salary is fixed
In government and nonprofit communications roles, pay bands are often rigid. If the offer is lower than expected, ask whether the title can reflect your actual scope, since a senior or lead designation affects your next negotiation more than a small one-time bump.
Communications Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most communications professionals?
The companies hiring the most communications professionals right now include Nexstar Media Group, Mobile Communications America, and Amazon, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly strong at healthcare systems, large nonprofits, and technology companies with active public affairs or government relations functions.
How many communications jobs are remote?
About 29% of communications openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible fields for location-independent work. Internal communications and digital content roles tend to offer the most remote options, while crisis communications and executive communications positions more often require on-site or close proximity to leadership.
How do you become a communications professional?
Start with a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or English, then build hands-on experience through internships, campus media, or volunteer PR work for local organizations. Develop a portfolio of writing samples early, learn one or two media monitoring tools, and focus your first job search on coordinator or specialist roles where you can build a specialization over two to three years.
Can you get hired in communications with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level coordinator and associate roles regularly go to candidates without formal work history if their portfolio is strong. Clips from college newspapers, press releases written for student organizations, or social media content created for a small nonprofit all count. Focus your applications on organizations with communications teams large enough to train junior staff, and highlight any writing, editing, or public speaking you have done in any context.
What does the communications interview process look like?
Most communications hiring processes start with a recruiter or hiring manager phone screen, followed by a writing or editing skills test you complete at home. A panel interview with the communications team and a cross-functional stakeholder typically comes next, and finalists are often asked to present a short communications plan or respond to a simulated scenario. The entire process usually runs across three to four rounds.
Where can I find and apply to communications jobs?
You can find and apply to communications jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
