Financial Counselor Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in South Dakota?
You typically need a bachelor's degree in finance, social work, or a related field, followed by a nationally recognized credential such as the Accredited Financial Counselor designation through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. South Dakota does not issue a separate state license for financial counselors, but employers in healthcare and nonprofit sectors strongly prefer candidates who hold or are actively pursuing AFC or equivalent certification. Many positions also require a background check and continuing education.
Which companies hire financial counselors in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring financial counselors in South Dakota include Monument Health, Pennington County, and Pennington County, SD, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Healthcare systems, credit unions, and community action agencies are among the most consistent sources of financial counselor openings across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and South Dakota have the most financial counselor openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of demand as the state's financial and healthcare hub, home to major health systems and regional banking operations, while Rapid City and Aberdeen contribute steady openings through their own hospital networks, credit unions, and community-based financial organizations.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and they're more available than in many comparable fields, since financial counseling sessions and case management work are well suited to phone and video delivery. About 25% of financial counselor openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader adoption of telehealth and virtual client services. Budget coaching, credit review, and follow-up sessions are the parts of the role most commonly conducted remotely.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to financial counseling assistant or case coordinator roles at community action agencies and nonprofit credit counseling organizations in Sioux Falls or Rapid City, where new staff often learn on the job under a senior counselor. Sanford Health and Avera Health both hire financial counseling associates for their patient financial services departments, which is a strong lateral entry point from social work or customer service backgrounds. Completing an Accredited Financial Counselor candidacy program while working gives entry-level candidates a measurable credential edge.
