Staff Accountant Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff accountant in South Dakota?
Most employers in South Dakota require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance as the baseline. To pursue CPA licensure, candidates apply through the South Dakota Board of Accountancy, which administers the Uniform CPA Examination and requires completion of the required credit hours in accounting and business. Many staff accountants enter without a CPA and pursue it while working, which is a path commonly supported by larger South Dakota employers in healthcare, banking, and state government.
Which companies hire staff accountants in South Dakota?
Employers hiring staff accountants in South Dakota right now include Community Counseling Services, Golden West, and TAK Broadband, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's mix of large healthcare systems, financial institutions, and regional energy companies creates consistent year-round demand for staff accountants across both corporate and nonprofit settings.
Which South Dakota cities have the most staff accountant jobs?
Huron, Wall, and Fort Pierre have the most staff accountant openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of postings because it is home to the state's biggest healthcare networks, regional bank headquarters, and corporate shared services centers, while Rapid City and Aberdeen contribute steady openings tied to government agencies, healthcare systems, and regional utilities serving western and northeastern South Dakota.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields, since staff accounting is largely desk-based and document-driven. About 50% of staff accountant openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's compatibility with distributed work. General ledger maintenance, financial reporting, and tax compliance tasks are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely, while month-end close and audit support roles more often require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a staff accountant in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for accounts payable, accounts receivable, or payroll specialist roles at larger South Dakota employers like Sanford Health, Avera Health, or regional banks, then moving into a staff accountant title after demonstrating core skills. Many South Dakota healthcare systems and financial institutions hire accounting associates or finance rotational graduates directly from South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota. Earning or actively pursuing CPA licensure through the South Dakota Board of Accountancy gives candidates a clear edge over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to staff accountant jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to staff accountant jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the roles available, identify the ones that match your background and location preferences, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
