Staff Accountant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff accountant in California?
A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is the standard entry point for staff accountant roles in California. Many employers prefer candidates who are working toward or have passed sections of the CPA exam, which in California is administered through the California Board of Accountancy. While a CPA license is not required for most staff accountant positions, meeting the California Board of Accountancy's education requirements and beginning the exam process puts candidates ahead of the field.
Which companies hire staff accountants in California?
Companies currently hiring staff accountants in California include NOVOGRADAC & COMPANY, Monster Energy, and ghj, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's scale and industry diversity mean openings appear across public accounting firms, large technology companies, hospital systems, and real estate investment firms throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most staff accountant jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco lead California for staff accountant openings. Los Angeles drives the largest share because of its density of entertainment studios, real estate firms, and regional headquarters, while San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's concentration of technology companies and venture-backed firms with growing finance functions.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many roles. About 46% of staff accountant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on spreadsheets, ERP systems, and cloud-based accounting software rather than physical documents. General ledger, accounts payable, and financial reporting work tends to be the most remote-eligible portion of the role.
How can I get hired as a staff accountant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for accounting associate or junior accountant roles, which California's large hospital systems such as Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health, as well as Big Four and regional public accounting firms, recruit for directly out of college. An internship completed during a California accounting program carries significant weight. Completing CPA exam sections before or shortly after graduation signals commitment and gives candidates a measurable edge over those who wait.
Where can I find and apply to staff accountant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to staff accountant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated on an ongoing basis. Search the roles available, identify the ones that fit your background and preferred location, and apply directly through each listing.
