Staff Accountant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff accountant in California?
A bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field is the standard starting point for staff accountant roles in California. Most employers prefer candidates who are actively pursuing CPA licensure through the California Board of Accountancy, which requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting California's education and experience requirements. While a CPA license is not required to work as a staff accountant, being a CPA candidate significantly strengthens a California application.
How much do staff accountants make in California?
Staff accountants in California earn a median of about $97,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,770 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire staff accountants in California?
Employers hiring staff accountants in California right now include Intuit, Citrin Cooperman, and SingerLewak LLP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of global technology headquarters, large healthcare networks, and entertainment studios creates a particularly wide range of industries and company sizes actively recruiting for this role.
Which California cities have the most staff accountant jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most staff accountant openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its entertainment, real estate, and healthcare industries, San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's density of technology and venture-backed companies, and San Diego adds demand from its large defense contractors and biotech sector, making each city's listings reflect its dominant local economy rather than just overall population size.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many other accounting roles, since staff accountant work is largely analytical and software-based. About 28% of staff accountant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work can be done inside cloud-based ERP and accounting platforms. General ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, and financial reporting are the tasks most commonly performed fully remote, while roles with hands-on audit or inventory responsibilities tend to require at least part-time on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a staff accountant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for accounts payable, accounts receivable, or bookkeeping roles at mid-size California companies and using that position to move into a junior staff accountant title within one to two years. Large California employers such as Kaiser Permanente and major public accounting firms with California offices run new-graduate programs designed for candidates with no professional experience. Completing the coursework required for California CPA candidacy, even without sitting the exam yet, and gaining proficiency in NetSuite or QuickBooks gives a low-experience candidate a concrete edge in California applications.
Where can I find and apply to staff accountant jobs in California?
