Staff Accountant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a staff accountant in New York?
Most staff accountant roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance at minimum. Many employers in New York prefer candidates who are CPA-eligible or actively pursuing licensure through the New York State Board of Public Accountancy, which sets education and experience requirements for the CPA credential. Candidates who have completed the required credit hours and passed sections of the Uniform CPA Examination stand out in a competitive market.
How much do staff accountants make in New York?
Staff accountants in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire staff accountants in New York?
Employers hiring staff accountants in New York right now include Standard Motor Products, AFP MANAGEMENT, and Adelphi University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, Big Four accounting firms, and large hospital systems means demand for staff accountants stays consistent across both the private and nonprofit sectors throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most staff accountant jobs?
New York, Albany, and Commack have the most staff accountant openings in New York. New York City accounts for the largest share by far given its density of financial services firms, corporate headquarters, and professional services offices, while White Plains and Albany drive openings through regional corporate centers and state government agencies that maintain substantial in-house accounting teams.
Are there remote staff accountant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since staff accountant work is largely desk-based and output-driven. About 26% of staff accountant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements being more common than fully remote. Tasks like financial reporting, reconciliations, and close processes translate well to remote work, while audit support and compliance reviews more often require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a staff accountant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounting internship or a junior accounts payable or accounts receivable role, both of which large New York employers regularly use as pipelines into staff accountant positions. New York City-area firms including the Big Four and major hospital systems like NYC Health and Hospitals run structured new-graduate programs. Completing your required CPA credit hours and passing at least one exam section gives you a clear edge over candidates who have not yet started the process.
