Insurance Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance in South Dakota?
To work as a licensed insurance professional in South Dakota, you must obtain an insurance producer license through the South Dakota Division of Insurance, which is overseen by the Department of Labor and Regulation. Candidates must complete state-approved pre-licensing education, pass a proctored exam for their chosen line of authority such as property and casualty or life and health, and submit an application. No college degree is required to sit for the exam, though a background in business or finance is common among applicants.
Which companies hire insurances in South Dakota?
Employers hiring insurances in South Dakota right now include American Family Insurance, AMBA, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's insurance market also includes regional carriers and independent agencies with a strong focus on agricultural and rural coverage products unique to the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most insurance jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and South Dakota have the most insurance job openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of postings as the state's financial and healthcare hub, where regional carriers and third-party administrators are headquartered, while Rapid City and Aberdeen support additional demand through local independent agencies and branch offices serving western and north-central South Dakota communities.
Are there remote insurance jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than many fields, since insurance roles such as underwriting, claims processing, and customer service are well suited to remote work. About 33% of insurance openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of much of the work. Roles in claims adjusting and independent agency sales, however, still require regular in-person client or field activity.
How can I get hired as a insurance in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is obtaining your South Dakota insurance producer license and applying to entry-level customer service representative or sales associate roles at regional carriers or independent agencies in Sioux Falls or Rapid City. Employers such as large health plan administrators and farm bureau-affiliated agencies regularly bring on candidates with no prior insurance experience if they hold an active license. Lateral moves from banking, retail, or agricultural lending are also common, as client service and financial product knowledge transfer well into insurance sales and support roles.
Where can I find and apply to insurance jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to insurance jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your license type, experience, and preferred location or work arrangement, and apply directly to each one that fits.
