Food Supervisor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a food supervisor in New York?
The clearest path is earning the New York State Food Protection Certificate, issued through the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene or equivalent county programs elsewhere in the state, which demonstrates foundational food safety competency most employers require. Beyond that credential, most New York employers look for a background in food service operations, whether through culinary or hospitality programs at institutions like CUNY or SUNY, or through progressive kitchen and dining roles leading to a supervisory assignment.
How much do food supervisors make in New York?
Food supervisors in New York earn a median of about $47,190 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,570 for the lowest 10% to over $73,020 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire food supervisors in New York?
Employers hiring food supervisors in New York right now include Starbucks, Aramark, and NYU Langone Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of hospitals, universities, hotels, and large corporate campuses means contract foodservice companies and institutional employers are consistently among the most active hirers in the state.
Which New York cities have the most food supervisor jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Buffalo are the New York cities with the most food supervisor openings. New York City leads by a wide margin given its concentration of hotels, restaurants, hospitals, and corporate dining accounts, while Buffalo and Albany support steady demand through their regional hospital systems, state government facilities, and university campuses that rely on contract and in-house food service teams.
Are there remote food supervisor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Food supervisor work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring on-site oversight of kitchen operations, staff, and safety compliance, so most roles require a physical presence. About 0% of food supervisor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve administrative or multi-site coordination duties rather than direct daily floor supervision.
How can I get hired as a food supervisor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is moving into a lead or shift-lead role from a line cook, food service worker, or dining associate position at a large institutional employer such as a SUNY or CUNY campus dining operation, an NYC Health and Hospitals facility, or a contract provider like Aramark or Compass Group. Earning the New York State Food Protection Certificate first signals supervisory readiness and gives you a concrete credential, and internal promotion programs at these employers regularly advance hourly staff into supervisory roles without requiring prior management titles.
Where can I find and apply to food supervisor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to food supervisor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
