Insurance Sales Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance sales consultant in California?
To work as an insurance sales consultant in California, you must obtain a license through the California Department of Insurance. The process requires completing a pre-licensing education course for the line of authority you want, passing the California insurance licensing exam administered by PSI Exams, and submitting a license application. Lines include property and casualty, life, and accident and health. A high school diploma meets the minimum education requirement, though many employers prefer a bachelor's degree.
How much do insurance sales consultants make in California?
Insurance sales consultants in California earn a median of about $76,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,560 for the lowest 10% to over $165,430 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire insurance sales consultants in California?
Employers hiring insurance sales consultants in California right now include USI Insurance Services, Farmers Insurance, and Liberty Mutual Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large population and diverse economy create consistent demand at both regional agencies and major national carriers with headquarters or large branch operations throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most insurance sales consultant jobs?
Irvine, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have the most insurance sales consultant openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to its sheer size, dense small-business base, and concentration of commercial insurance brokerages, while San Francisco's tech and financial sectors drive strong demand for employee benefits and professional liability specialists, and San Diego's growing biotech and defense industries support a steady need for commercial lines consultants.
Are there remote insurance sales consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many client-facing sales roles. About 17% of insurance sales consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the quoting, advising, and renewal process has moved to phone and video. The positions most likely to be fully remote are personal lines and small-business accounts, while large commercial accounts and group benefits roles more often require in-person client meetings.
How can I get hired as a insurance sales consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is obtaining your California Department of Insurance license first, which signals seriousness and removes a barrier for employers. Large California agencies and carriers such as Farmers Insurance and AAA of Northern California run structured new-agent or associate producer programs designed for candidates without a sales background. Adjacent roles like customer service representative or insurance assistant at a California brokerage frequently lead to producer openings from within. A completed pre-licensing course and a willingness to start on an assigned book of business strengthens any application.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across carriers, independent agencies, and brokerages. Search the listings, find roles that match your license type, experience level, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
