IT Support Technician Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it support technician in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as an it support technician. The standard hiring path begins with a high school diploma or associate degree in information technology, followed by earning CompTIA A+ certification, which most Virginia employers treat as the baseline credential. Many candidates start in helpdesk or desktop support roles at government contractors or large commercial employers, then build toward certifications like Network+ or Security+ as they advance.
Which companies hire it support technicians in Virginia?
Companies currently hiring it support technicians in Virginia include SAIC, BMZ, and KBR, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means a significant share of these openings come from large government contracting firms with long-term, multi-year programs based in Northern Virginia and the Hampton Roads region.
Which Virginia cities have the most it support technician jobs?
Arlington, Chantilly, and Virginia Beach have the most it support technician openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia drives the largest share due to the density of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms clustered around the Pentagon corridor and Tysons, while Richmond and Hampton Roads generate steady demand through state government operations, healthcare systems, and naval installations.
Are there remote it support technician jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles because much of the work involves hands-on hardware support and on-site presence, particularly for cleared positions tied to federal facilities. About 33% of it support technician openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and the roles most likely to offer flexibility are tier-two software support and remote desktop administration positions that do not require physical access to equipment.
How can I get hired as a it support technician in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is earning CompTIA A+ certification and applying to entry-level helpdesk or desktop support roles at Virginia's large federal contractors, which regularly hire associates without prior professional experience. Employers like Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton run new-hire onboarding cohorts for junior IT roles, and many state agencies in Richmond post IT associate positions open to recent graduates. Moving laterally from a customer service or administrative coordinator role within a technology-heavy organization is another common door-opener, especially when paired with a home lab portfolio or a completed IT certificate program from a Northern Virginia Community College or similar institution.
Where can I find and apply to it support technician jobs in Virginia?
