Tips for Your Legal Administrative Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume for each practice area
Litigation support, corporate transactional work, and family law each demand different skills. Highlight the specific case types, filing systems, or software you've used for that practice area rather than listing general legal experience.
Certify your legal software proficiency early
Many postings screen for Clio, iManage, or LexisNexis before reviewing anything else. If you've used those tools, name them prominently in your skills section and explain the context, not just the software name.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists legal administrative assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Read job postings for billable-hour expectations
Some legal admin roles require supporting attorneys who bill clients by the hour, meaning your own pace and accuracy directly affect firm revenue. Flag that you understand this dynamic in your cover letter to stand out.
Prepare for a timed typing or proofreading test
Many legal employers require a typing-speed test or ask you to proofread a sample legal document during the interview stage. Practicing legal document formats beforehand gives you a concrete edge over candidates who don't.
Follow up with a brief, professional email
After an interview, send a follow-up email that references one specific topic discussed, such as the firm's case management system or a workflow challenge they mentioned. It reinforces your attention to detail, which is central to the role.
Legal Administrative Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most legal administrative assistants?
The companies hiring the most legal administrative assistants right now include Jobot, Polsinelli, and State Street, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Both large national law firms and corporate legal departments consistently maintain steady demand for this role.
How many legal administrative assistant jobs are remote?
About 24% of legal administrative assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though in-office roles remain common at firms that require physical document handling or court-runner duties. Sub-areas like contract review coordination and compliance administration tend to offer the most remote flexibility within the field.
How do you become a legal administrative assistant?
Start by completing a relevant degree or certificate in legal studies, paralegal studies, or business administration, then build familiarity with legal document formats and court filing procedures. Gain practical experience through internships at a law firm or corporate legal department. Learning case management software like Clio or iManage before applying significantly strengthens your candidacy.
Can you get hired as a legal administrative assistant with little experience?
Yes, entry-level legal administrative assistant roles exist, particularly at smaller law firms and government agencies willing to train candidates who demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills. Completing a legal studies or paralegal certificate, volunteering at a legal aid organization, and showing working knowledge of legal terminology can offset limited paid work history effectively.
What does the legal administrative assistant interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone or video screening focused on your legal software experience and familiarity with office procedures. An in-person or virtual interview usually follows, often including a practical component such as a typing test or a proofreading exercise with a sample legal document. Some firms add a second round with a supervising attorney or office manager.
Where can I find and apply to legal administrative assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to legal administrative assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your experience and practice area preference, then apply directly to each listing without any additional steps between you and the employer.
