Materials Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a materials engineer in Texas?
Most Texas employers require a bachelor's degree in materials science, metallurgical engineering, or a closely related discipline. While Texas does not mandate a state-issued license for most industry materials engineer roles, engineers who sign off on public works or structural designs must obtain a Professional Engineer license through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Earning an Engineer-in-Training designation after passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is a common early career step in Texas.
How much do materials engineers make in Texas?
Materials engineers in Texas earn a median of about $117,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,690 for the lowest 10% to over $187,460 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire materials engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring materials engineers in Texas right now include Applied Materials, MP Materials, and Terracon Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of aerospace primes, petrochemical facilities, and semiconductor fabs means demand is distributed across multiple industries rather than a single sector.
Which Texas cities have the most materials engineer jobs?
Austin, Fort Worth, and Dallas have the most materials engineer openings in Texas. Houston's role as a global energy capital drives high demand in oil, gas, and chemical materials testing, while Dallas-Fort Worth's aerospace and defense contractors and Austin's semiconductor and electronics manufacturers account for strong hiring in those metros.
Are there remote materials engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Materials engineering is fundamentally a hands-on field requiring lab access, testing equipment, and physical sample handling, which limits full remote work. About 3% of materials engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in data analysis, materials specification review, or technical writing rather than lab-based testing or manufacturing support.
How can I get hired as a materials engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate rotational or development programs at large Texas manufacturers and energy companies, where positions in quality assurance, inspection, or materials testing serve as the practical starting point. Companies in Houston's petrochemical corridor and the DFW aerospace cluster regularly bring on entry-level engineers for testing and failure analysis support roles. Completing an internship during your degree, earning an Engineer-in-Training designation through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and building a portfolio of materials characterization projects gives candidates a measurable edge over peers without hands-on experience.
Where can I find and apply to materials engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to materials engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers across the state's aerospace, energy, semiconductor, and manufacturing sectors. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
