Production Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a production manager in Virginia?
Most production managers in Virginia enter the role through a combination of a bachelor's degree in manufacturing, industrial engineering, or operations management and several years of floor-level supervisory experience. Virginia does not require a state-issued license for production managers, but employers in defense and food processing sectors often expect Lean Six Sigma certification or OSHA compliance training. Starting in a production supervisor or quality assurance role at a Virginia manufacturer is the most common path upward.
Which companies hire production managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring production managers in Virginia right now include LandCare, William & Mary, and Smithfield Foods, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, along with food processing operations in the western and central parts of the state, means openings appear regularly at large, established facilities throughout the year.
Which Virginia cities have the most production manager jobs?
Salem, Sterling, and Newport News account for the most production manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's proximity to major defense contractors drives demand there, Richmond's food and beverage manufacturing base supports steady openings in the capital region, and Hampton Roads' naval and shipbuilding industries generate consistent demand for experienced production managers across the southeastern part of the state.
Are there remote production manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Production management is fundamentally a hands-on, on-site role requiring direct oversight of personnel, equipment, and output on the floor. About 23% of production manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be senior roles with a planning or program management component rather than direct line supervision. Most Virginia openings require full on-site presence at the manufacturing facility.
How can I get hired as a production manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a production supervisor or team lead role at a Virginia manufacturer, which requires less experience than a full manager position and builds the floor credibility employers want. Large Virginia food processors and defense suppliers regularly hire associates and recent graduates into rotational operations programs. A Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification adds a measurable edge. Lateral moves from quality control, inventory, or logistics roles at Virginia manufacturing sites are also a well-worn path into production management.
Where can I find and apply to production manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to production manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across manufacturing sectors. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employers posting them.
