Program Specialist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program specialist in New York?
Most program specialist roles in New York require at least a bachelor's degree in a field related to the program area, such as public administration, social work, education, or public health. State agency positions often require meeting New York State Civil Service exam requirements and appearing on an eligible list through the New York State Department of Civil Service. Nonprofit and healthcare employers typically look for relevant field experience alongside the degree, and some roles in behavioral health require credentials recognized by the New York State Education Department.
Which companies hire program specialists in New York?
Employers hiring program specialists in New York right now include NYU Langone Health, Bloomberg, and Goldman Sachs, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large public sector, extensive hospital networks, and dense nonprofit landscape make it one of the deepest markets in the country for this role.
Which New York cities have the most program specialist jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Rochester have the most program specialist openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its concentration of city and state agencies, major hospital systems, and thousands of nonprofits, while Albany draws heavily from New York State government offices and Albany-area health and human services organizations, and Buffalo benefits from anchor institutions in healthcare and higher education such as Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo.
Are there remote program specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles. About 30% of program specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves coordination, reporting, and communication rather than on-site service delivery. Roles focused on grants management, policy development, and data reporting tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a program specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a program coordinator or program assistant role at a New York City or Albany-area nonprofit or state agency, where responsibilities closely mirror those of a specialist at a lower grade level. Large employers such as New York City Health + Hospitals and the SUNY system regularly post associate-level and administrative support roles that serve as direct stepping stones. Completing a New York State Civil Service exam and appearing on an eligible list significantly improves access to state agency openings. A relevant internship or AmeriCorps service year in New York also carries real weight with public sector and nonprofit hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to program specialist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to program specialist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
