Program Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program assistant in New York?
Most program assistant roles in New York require a bachelor's degree, typically in public administration, education, social work, human services, or a related field. There is no state-issued license specific to the role, but positions in healthcare settings may require familiarity with New York State Department of Health compliance requirements. Candidates who have completed internships with New York nonprofits, city agencies, or university departments are consistently preferred by hiring managers across the state.
Which companies hire program assistants in New York?
Employers hiring program assistants in New York right now include Abercrombie & Fitch, Columbia University, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of universities, hospital systems, and state and city government agencies means program assistant demand stays relatively stable year-round compared to other markets.
Which New York cities have the most program assistant jobs?
New York, Albany, and Brooklyn have the most program assistant openings in New York. New York City drives the largest volume by far given its concentration of major nonprofits, academic medical centers, and city and state agency headquarters, while Albany's openings are heavily tied to state government offices, and Buffalo's reflect its growing network of healthcare systems and community development organizations.
Are there remote program assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, though they are less common than in fully desk-based fields, since many program assistant roles involve in-person coordination, community engagement, or on-site program delivery. About 9% of program assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote work most often available in grant writing, data reporting, and administrative coordination functions that do not require direct participant contact.
How can I get hired as a program assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an internship or AmeriCorps service placement with a New York nonprofit or city agency, which many large organizations treat as a direct pipeline for entry-level hires. Institutions like the City University of New York and major hospital systems such as Northwell Health run associate or coordinator-in-training programs that welcome candidates without direct experience. Moving laterally from an administrative assistant or case aide role at a community-based organization is another well-worn path, and completing a certificate in nonprofit management or public administration strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to program assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to program assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search through the roles available, find one that matches your background and interests, and apply directly to the employer.
