Program Specialist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program specialist in Texas?
Most program specialist roles in Texas require a bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the program area, such as public administration, social work, health sciences, or business. State agency roles often require eligibility under Texas state classified employment standards administered through the Texas State Auditor's Office job classification system. Specialized areas like behavioral health or child welfare may require licensure through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners or a related board, depending on the specific duties.
Which companies hire program specialists in Texas?
Employers hiring program specialists in Texas right now include Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Houston Methodist, and LTIMindtree, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large state government infrastructure, active defense contracting sector, and major nonprofit networks make it one of the more diverse hiring environments for this role nationally.
Which Texas cities have the most program specialist jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most program specialist openings in Texas. Austin's concentration of state agency headquarters drives a large share of public-sector postings, while Houston's scale in healthcare and energy brings demand from large hospital systems and contractors, and San Antonio benefits from significant federal and military-affiliated program activity at installations like Joint Base San Antonio.
Are there remote program specialist jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since much of the work involves analysis, reporting, and coordination rather than on-site delivery. About 18% of program specialist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how adaptable the role has become post-pandemic. Grant management, data reporting, and policy coordination functions tend to be the most consistently remote-eligible areas within program specialist positions.
How can I get hired as a program specialist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a program coordinator or program assistant role, which Texas Health and Human Services, the Texas Workforce Commission, and large nonprofits like United Way of Greater Houston regularly post as entry-level openings. Internships or AmeriCorps placements with Texas state agencies also create direct pipelines. A relevant degree combined with a Texas-recognized credential such as a Certified Nonprofit Professional designation or a case management certificate gives candidates a clear edge when competing without direct program specialist experience.
Where can I find and apply to program specialist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to program specialist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across state agencies, healthcare systems, defense contractors, and nonprofits. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
