Project Accountant Jobs in North Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project accountant in North Dakota?
Start with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, which is the baseline requirement for nearly every project accountant opening in North Dakota. While state licensure is not required for project accounting roles specifically, pursuing CPA licensure through the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy strengthens your candidacy, particularly with energy and construction employers. Most North Dakota employers also value experience with job costing software and at least one internship with a regional contractor or energy firm.
Which companies hire project accountants in North Dakota?
Employers hiring project accountants in North Dakota right now include Intuit, Knife River, and State of North Dakota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's energy and heavy construction industries generate the most consistent demand, particularly among firms managing large capital projects in the Bakken region and the Missouri River corridor.
Which North Dakota cities have the most project accountant jobs?
Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck hold the most project accountant openings in North Dakota. Bismarck leads as the state capital and home to major utilities, infrastructure firms, and corporate headquarters, while Fargo's diversified economy anchors demand in construction management and financial services, and Williston remains active due to ongoing Bakken energy development and the project-heavy nature of oilfield operations.
Are there remote project accountant jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 8% of project accountant openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the role. The tasks most commonly performed remotely include financial reporting, budget tracking, and invoice review, while on-site presence is more often required during project closeout or audit phases.
How can I get hired as a project accountant in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable, accounts receivable, or staff accountant role at a North Dakota construction or energy firm, then transitioning into project accounting once you understand the job costing cycle. MDU Resources and Knife River Corporation have historically brought on early-career accounting staff who rotate into project support roles. A degree in accounting paired with Sage or Viewpoint familiarity and a North Dakota State Board of Accountancy-recognized credential path gives new candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to project accountant jobs in North Dakota?
You can find and apply to project accountant jobs in North Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to each position that matches your experience.
