How do you become a research fellow in New York?
Becoming a research fellow in New York typically requires completing a doctoral degree, such as a PhD or MD, in a relevant field, followed by applying directly to postdoctoral or fellowship programs at New York institutions. No universal state license governs the research fellow role, but fellows working in clinical research may need to comply with New York State Department of Health human subjects regulations and obtain relevant IRB certifications. Strong applications include a research statement, publications, and faculty references.
How much do research fellows make in New York?
Research fellows in New York earn a median of about $86,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,890 for the lowest 10% to over $127,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research fellows in New York?
Employers hiring research fellows in New York right now include New York Society For Relief Of Ruptured & Crippled, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Simons Foundation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of academic medical centers, private research hospitals, and state health agencies means research fellow openings appear year-round across a wide range of disciplines and funding sources.
Which New York cities have the most research fellow jobs?
New York, Utica, and Brooklyn have the most research fellow openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its unmatched concentration of academic medical centers, universities, and private research institutes, while Buffalo and Rochester draw fellows through their major research universities and regional hospital systems, which run active postdoctoral and fellowship programs across the health sciences and social research fields.
Are there remote research fellow jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in most analytical fields. About 0% of research fellow openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the fact that many positions require on-site laboratory access, patient interaction, or institutional resources. The sub-areas most compatible with remote or hybrid arrangements tend to be policy research, health economics, and computational or data-focused fellowships.
How can I get hired as a research fellow in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured postdoctoral programs or named fellowship cohorts at New York institutions before graduation. Memorial Sloan Kettering, Weill Cornell Medicine, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine all run formal postdoctoral onboarding programs that accept candidates with no prior independent research appointment. Lateral moves from roles such as research coordinator, clinical research associate, or laboratory technician are also common entry points, and having an IRB certification or a first-author publication gives applicants a concrete edge.
