Strategy Consultant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a strategy consultant in Virginia?
Becoming a strategy consultant in Virginia typically starts with a bachelor's degree in business, economics, public policy, or a quantitative field, followed by a master's or MBA for senior roles. Virginia has no state-issued license for strategy consultants, but many positions, especially in the federal contracting sector, require a security clearance obtainable through a sponsoring employer. Certifications like the PMP or Lean Six Sigma are widely valued across Northern Virginia's federal and commercial consulting markets.
How much do strategy consultants make in Virginia?
Strategy consultants in Virginia earn a median of about $117,580 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,140 for the lowest 10% to over $174,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire strategy consultants in Virginia?

Virginia's federal contracting ecosystem means many of these employers focus on defense, intelligence, and civilian agency transformation work alongside commercial advisory practices.
Which Virginia cities have the most strategy consultant jobs?
Rosslyn, Arlington, and McLean lead in strategy consultant openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's proximity to federal agencies and the Pentagon drives the highest concentration, while Richmond's mix of corporate headquarters and state government clients sustains steady demand, and Hampton Roads supports consulting work tied to defense and military logistics.
Are there remote strategy consultant jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many professional fields. About 55% of strategy consultant openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the analytical and advisory nature of the work. Research, data modeling, and deck development are the tasks most commonly performed remotely, while client-facing engagements and federal work often require on-site presence, particularly for cleared positions.
How can I get hired as a strategy consultant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to analyst or associate programs at large Virginia-based federal contractors and consulting firms, which regularly recruit recent graduates. Firms like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos run structured new-graduate programs out of their Northern Virginia offices. Adjacent roles in project coordination, business analysis, or data analysis at Virginia state agencies or defense contractors also provide a credible bridge into strategy consulting without prior consulting experience.
