Tax Director Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax director in Ohio?
Most tax directors in Ohio hold an active CPA license issued by the Accountancy Board of Ohio, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Ohio's education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is the standard starting point, with many employers also expecting a master's in taxation or an LLM in tax. Candidates typically progress through senior tax accountant and tax manager roles before reaching director level.
How much do tax directors make in Ohio?
Tax directors in Ohio earn a median of about $79,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,140 for the lowest 10% to over $131,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in Ohio?
Employers hiring tax directors in Ohio right now include CBIZ, CliftonLarsonAllen, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Ohio's combination of Fortune 500 headquarters, large regional financial institutions, and major manufacturing companies creates consistent demand for senior tax leadership across both in-house corporate tax departments and regional public accounting firms.
Which Ohio cities have the most tax director jobs?
The greatest concentration of tax director openings in Ohio is in Cleveland, Canton, and Maumee. Columbus draws the most activity as Ohio's largest corporate hub and home to several insurance, financial services, and retail headquarters, while Cleveland and Cincinnati anchor demand through their strong regional banking, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors that each support sizable in-house tax functions.
Are there remote tax director jobs in Ohio?
Yes, and more than most senior finance roles, since tax director work is largely analytical, document-driven, and executable from anywhere with secure system access. About 50% of tax director openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of the role. Tax provision, research, and compliance planning are the functions most frequently performed fully remote, while roles with close CFO or board interaction tend to require regular in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax director in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving into a senior tax manager role first at a large Ohio public accounting firm or corporate tax department, then transitioning to a director title once you have direct reports and ownership of a tax function. Large Ohio employers in insurance, banking, and manufacturing regularly develop internal talent through rotational finance programs. Earning your Ohio CPA license and building multistate compliance or ASC 740 provision experience are the credentials that most consistently accelerate that move from manager to director.
