Tax Senior Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior in Michigan?
Most Michigan employers require a CPA license issued or endorsed by the Michigan Board of Accountancy, which involves passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Michigan's education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting is the standard starting point. Candidates who complete their CPA and accumulate several years in public accounting or corporate tax at a Michigan firm or company typically qualify for tax senior roles.
How much do tax seniors make in Michigan?
Tax seniors in Michigan earn a median of about $78,820 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,620 for the lowest 10% to over $131,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax seniors in Michigan?
Employers hiring tax seniors in Michigan right now include Hantz, BDO, and UHY LLP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's mix of Big Four and regional public accounting firms, alongside major corporate headquarters in the Detroit area, means consistent openings across both public practice and industry tax departments.
Which Michigan cities have the most tax senior jobs?
Detroit, Troy, and Grand Rapids have the most tax senior openings in Michigan. Detroit and its suburbs drive the largest share because of the dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major accounting firm offices, and financial services firms anchored in the metro, while Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor add significant volume through regional firm growth and university-adjacent finance sectors.
Are there remote tax senior jobs in Michigan?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax seniors work primarily with documents, software, and data, making the role well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 26% of tax senior openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how widely accounting firms and corporate tax departments have adopted flexible work. Compliance and provision work tends to be the most remote-eligible, while tax controversy and client-facing advisory roles more often require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a tax senior in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is starting in a staff or associate tax role at a Michigan public accounting firm or in a corporate tax department, then building toward senior level over two to three years. Large Michigan employers and Big Four offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids run structured new-graduate programs that place candidates directly into tax practice. Sitting for the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to Michigan business entity returns or ASC 740 basics in an entry role makes the step up to tax senior significantly easier.
Where can I find and apply to tax senior jobs in Michigan?
