Work Schedule:

Hiring for both day (M-F, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.) and evening (M-Th, 6 p.m.-11 p.m.) class schedules.

Rate of Pay:

This is a Part-Time tutor/trainer position with the following pay rate per hour: $28.00

The offer will be based on education and experience, in alignment with the College’s compensation philosophy and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), if applicable.

Job Summary:

This position assists with CDL training by working with students on pre-trip inspections, vehicle control skills, and on-road driving in tractor-trailer commercial vehicles with manual transmissions. Trainers support program operations, reinforce safe driving practices, and help students develop into safe and successful commercial drivers.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

o Valid Class A CDL
o Three (3) years of tractor-trailer driving experience, including manual transmissions
o No moving violations within the past three (3) years
o Safe driving habits are required
o Basic skills in the use of technology, including email and electronic communication
o Applicants must successfully complete a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screen
o Flexibility to work variable schedules throughout the year, with most work taking place during behind-the-wheel training phases. Work outside these phases is based on the needs of the department and may not be available.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

o Five (5) years of tractor-trailer driving experience with manual transmissions
o Experience with student CDL instruction
o Valid Class A CDL without automatic transmission (E) restriction
o HazMat, Doubles, Tanker, and/or any other endorsements
o Experience using technology for communication, training, and/or electronic recordkeeping
o Flexibility to work across day and/or night shifts based on the needs of the program is ideal, but not required

Essential Duties:

o Assist students with hands-on CDL training activities, including pre-trip inspections, vehicle control skills, on-road driving, manual transmission operation, and other program training activities as assigned.
o Reinforce safe commercial driving practices and provide students with guidance, coaching, and feedback throughout training activities.
o Promote and maintain a safe training environment by following established safety procedures, monitoring student activities, and addressing or reporting unsafe conditions and practices.
o Maintain accurate and timely student training records using program-designated electronic recordkeeping systems in accordance with FMCSA and Illinois Secretary of State requirements.
o Communicate effectively with program staff regarding student progress, attendance, safety concerns, and other related matters.
o Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and effective communication in all interactions with students, colleagues, and members of the public.
o Assist with the inspection, cleanliness, and safe operation of program vehicles and equipment and promptly report maintenance or safety concerns

o Perform other duties related to CDL training and program operations as assigned.
