Search Construction Jobs in IllinoisConstruction Green Card Sponsorship Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
Which construction companies sponsor Green Card visas in Illinois?
Large general contractors and engineering firms with Illinois operations, including Turner Construction, Skanska, Pepper Construction, and AECOM, have documented histories of Green Card sponsorship through DOL PERM filings. Sponsorship is most common for roles requiring specialized expertise, such as structural engineers, project managers, and construction managers, where qualified U.S. workers are demonstrably difficult to source locally.
Which cities in Illinois have the most construction Green Card sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the largest concentration of sponsored construction roles in Illinois, driven by ongoing commercial development, infrastructure renewal along the lakefront, and major mixed-use projects in the Loop and Fulton Market districts. Suburban Cook County, Schaumburg, and Aurora also generate demand. Downstate markets like Peoria and Rockford see sponsorship activity tied to industrial and public infrastructure projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship in Illinois?
Green Card sponsorship in Illinois construction most often applies to roles classified as specialty occupations, typically requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Common qualifying positions include civil engineers, structural engineers, construction project managers, estimators with specialized technical training, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) engineers. General laborer and trades positions without degree requirements rarely qualify for employer-sponsored Green Card petitions.
How do I find construction Green Card sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and lets you filter construction roles in Illinois by visa sponsorship type, including Green Card. Rather than sorting through general job boards that rarely surface sponsorship details, Migrate Mate surfaces employers actively open to sponsoring, saving significant time. Searching by Illinois location and the construction category narrows results to the most relevant opportunities for your background.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in construction?
Illinois prevailing wage laws run alongside federal requirements, meaning employers sponsoring Green Cards through PERM must meet both state and DOL wage obligations for the relevant construction classification. Illinois also requires certain construction workers to hold state-issued licenses or certifications, so sponsored workers may need to obtain Illinois-specific credentials after arrival. Cook County and City of Chicago projects often carry additional compliance requirements tied to local ordinances.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card construction jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
