INTRODUCTION
The primary role of the Field Producer is to coordinate and facilitate newsgathering and production of stories across platforms for News Nation.
The position will be a weekend-based schedule (Saturdays and Sundays) in Chicago, one of the network’s hubs.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Field Producer will coordinate and oversee production for day-of and ongoing assignments, working with correspondents and videographers to pitch, set up interviews, gather video, collect information, and write stories. The producer is the liaison between the field team, national assignment desk and show personnel. The position requires travel to stories including breaking news and enterprise story shoots.
Primary Duties:
- Work with correspondents to determine news of day, pitch stories across platforms, conduct research, develop sources, arrange interviews and shoots.
- Gather and clear elements from affiliates, agencies, social media, etc.
- Able to newsgather (e.g., shoot video, sound), conduct informative interviews, find and/or log assets quickly and accurately, highlighting best sound and video options.
- Build out live hits, segments, and packages, with elements to complement the storytelling. Order graphics for hits.
- Able to write and craft scripts and/or copy edit with a critical eye.
- Serve as the point-person and liaison with the newsroom so the reporter can focus on gathering, writing and storytelling. Proactively and efficiently solve problems in the field and on assignment.
- Distribute new and confirmed editorial information to the network on a timely, reliable basis.
- Field producing, including scouting locations and securing permission for shoots and/or live shots.
- Experience and comfort as a multimedia journalist, to serve as a second camera on shoots, provide lives bumps and/or break off and gather additional elements.
- Ability to assist with and coordinate booking of travel.
- Develop and maintain contacts for stories and ongoing coverage.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Five or more years working in broadcast or digital news in a role that includes: writing, research, experience in the field.
Strong editorial judgement and communication skills.
Ability to work well with others and multi-task under tight deadlines.
Knowledge of current events, able to handle a wide variety of stories and content.
Balanced, unbiased approach to newsgathering and storytelling.
Multimedia/digital journalism skills: shooting, non-linear editing, file transfer (Latakoo).
REQUIREMENTS
Job is based in NewsNation's Chicago offices. Be present in office when not on assignment in the field.
Must be willing to work weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), varied hours and holidays as needed.
BA/BS degree in journalism preferred, or equivalent work experience.
Must be flexible with ability to travel, often with no prior notice.
Must have a valid driver’s license. This position requires driving and travel.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range - $65,000 – $80,000
