INTRODUCTION

Under the supervision of the Director of Advising, the Advising Specialist is responsible for primary contact of Dodge City Community College advisees to conduct academic and Technical Education advising including career aptitude, placement assistance, enrollment, transfer advising, degree auditing, monitoring of grades and academic achievement, completion and monitoring of Educational Action Plans. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

• To understand and commit to the Mission of the College ~ Dodge City Community College provides a student-centered learning environment where students can achieve their educational, personal, and career goals.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with staff, faculty, administration and students in order to collaborate and communicate effectively to best serve the students of Dodge City Community College.
• Serves as point of contact for new and continuing students through the onboarding, enrollment, and registration processes, including assistance in sending appropriate documentation.
• Guides and assists students in degree and educational program declarations.
• Assesses academic and transfer needs of students as it pertains to their chosen degree and educational program selection.
• Provides comprehensive personal academic and technical education advising and counseling, regarding curriculum/academic/technical program course selection.
• Verifies enrollment in courses required for graduation in chosen degree, educational, or technical program by conducting continuous degree audits for each student.
• May provide guidance pertaining to FAFSA completion and assistance in applying for any additional scholarships.
• Provides students with guidance and assistance to encourage persistence, retention, and success (graduation and/or transfer).
• Refers students to educational services on campus including tutoring centers, the Learning Resource Center (LRC), counseling services and grant programs with additional student success resources.
• Utilize a variety of technical platforms, including but not limited to SIS system, communication software, Microsoft Outlook, Google, and etrieve.
• Participates in continual professional development as designated by DCCC.
• Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in related field.
• Proven ability to work with diverse populations.
• Ability to maintain accurate and effective student advising documentation as required by the U. S. Department of Education / Office of Postsecondary Education.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, technical and written communication skills.
• Must maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and provide documentation of such.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, leadership, higher education administration, student personnel, or closely related field.
• A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the field of counseling, higher education, career advising, or advising.
• Experience in educational programs at the college/university level.
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Bilingual (English / Spanish).

• Ability to bend, stoop, reach, etc. as required to perform responsibilities.
• Ability to drive vehicle.
• Dexterity required to perform keyboard functions.
