Which construction companies in Michigan sponsor F-1 CPT visas?
Michigan-based firms with histories of hiring international students include Barton Malow, Walbridge, and Turner Construction's Detroit-area offices. Large general contractors and engineering-forward firms tend to be more familiar with CPT requirements than smaller subcontractors. Companies with formal internship programs are generally better equipped to handle CPT paperwork, as they already have established onboarding processes for student workers.
Which cities in Michigan have the most construction F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding suburbs, including Southfield and Troy, account for the largest share of construction F-1 CPT opportunities in Michigan, driven by ongoing commercial and infrastructure projects. Grand Rapids is a strong secondary market, with active commercial development and several regional contractors headquartered there. Lansing and Ann Arbor also produce openings, particularly tied to government-funded infrastructure and university construction projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship in Michigan?
Roles that align directly with a student's degree field are the qualifying factor for CPT, not the construction industry itself. Common qualifying positions include construction project management intern, civil engineering intern, structural engineering co-op, and BIM coordination roles. These tie clearly to civil engineering, construction management, or architecture degree programs. General labor or field-only roles without a connection to a student's academic program typically do not meet CPT eligibility requirements.
How do I find construction F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international students and visa holders, making it easier to find construction employers in Michigan that are open to F-1 CPT candidates. Because CPT eligibility depends on your specific degree program and school authorization, filtering by visa type and state on Migrate Mate helps narrow results to relevant opportunities rather than applying broadly to roles that may not qualify.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for F-1 CPT in the construction industry?
Michigan's construction industry is heavily tied to automotive and industrial infrastructure, which means many internship openings are with firms supporting facility expansion for manufacturers like Ford, GM, and Stellantis. CPT authorization must come from your DSO at your U.S. school before you begin any paid work, and the position must be an integral part of your curriculum. Students at Michigan universities should confirm their program's CPT policy well before accepting an offer.
