Which construction companies in New York sponsor F-1 CPT visas?
Large general contractors and construction management firms in New York are the most active CPT sponsors. Turner Construction, Tishman Construction (now part of AECOM), Skanska USA, and Suffolk Construction have established internship programs in New York City that regularly accommodate F-1 students on CPT. Engineering and design firms like WSP, Thornton Tomasetti, and Jacobs also hire CPT students for construction-adjacent roles in project management and site engineering.
Which cities in New York have the most construction F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the majority of CPT-eligible construction roles, driven by ongoing large-scale developments in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Buffalo is a growing secondary market, with significant infrastructure investment tied to semiconductor manufacturing projects and the Buffalo Billion initiative. Albany sees steady demand from state-funded infrastructure and public works programs. Students at universities in or near these cities have the strongest access to qualifying employers.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship in New York?
Roles that directly relate to a student's degree program qualify for CPT. Common qualifying positions in New York's construction sector include project engineer intern, field engineer, construction management analyst, estimating intern, BIM (Building Information Modeling) technician, and site safety intern. Roles must be integral to the student's curriculum, so a civil engineering or construction management student pursuing a project engineer internship is a standard qualifying scenario. Liberal arts or unrelated degree holders face a much harder time qualifying.
How do I find construction F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students seeking visa-sponsored roles, including construction F-1 CPT jobs in New York. You can filter by visa type and state to surface employers actively hiring CPT students in the construction sector. Beyond Migrate Mate, your university's DSO office often maintains relationships with local firms that have sponsored CPT students before, which can be a direct path to qualifying employers in New York.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for F-1 CPT sponsorship in construction?
New York requires construction workers on many job sites to hold OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification, which CPT students should plan to obtain before starting a site-based role. New York City additionally requires Site Safety Training (SST) cards for workers on certain projects. These are training credentials, not immigration-related, but employers will expect you to have them or complete them quickly. Your CPT authorization must also be in place before your first day of work, not after accepting an offer.
