Which legal companies sponsor Green Card visas in New York?
New York's largest law firms, including firms in the Am Law 100 such as Skadden Arps, Davis Polk, and Cleary Gottlieb, have established sponsorship programs for attorneys who receive H-1B visas and later transition to permanent residence. Large financial institutions with in-house legal teams, such as JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup, also sponsor Green Cards for corporate counsel and compliance attorneys on a regular basis.
Which cities in New York have the most legal Green Card sponsorship jobs?
Manhattan accounts for the overwhelming majority of legal Green Card sponsorship opportunities in New York, driven by the concentration of BigLaw firms, financial institutions, and multinational corporate headquarters in Midtown and the Financial District. Albany has a smaller but steady market in regulatory and government-adjacent legal roles. Buffalo and Rochester occasionally offer sponsorship through regional law firms and healthcare system legal departments, though volume is significantly lower than New York City.
What types of legal roles typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship in New York?
Roles that most commonly come with Green Card sponsorship in New York's legal sector include associate attorneys at large law firms, in-house corporate counsel, compliance officers, and patent attorneys, particularly those with technical degrees supporting IP practices. Legal roles are well-suited to Green Card sponsorship because they typically require a specific advanced degree, satisfying the specialty occupation and educational requirements that underpin employment-based immigrant visa categories like EB-2 and EB-3.
How do I find legal Green Card sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, including Green Card sponsorship in the legal sector. You can filter directly by visa type, industry, and state to surface legal roles in New York where employers have indicated sponsorship willingness. This saves significant time compared to manually reviewing job postings that rarely disclose sponsorship availability upfront, which is a common frustration for foreign national job seekers in law.
Are there any state-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in New York's legal industry?
New York requires attorneys to pass the New York Bar Examination before practicing law, and foreign-educated candidates must have their law degrees evaluated for eligibility to sit the exam. This credential step can affect sponsorship timelines, since employers typically want bar admission confirmed before committing to a permanent residence filing. New York's high concentration of internationally staffed BigLaw firms means that many employers already have established immigration counsel relationships, which can make the PERM labor certification process more structured than at smaller regional firms.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card legal jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
