Which chemicals & materials companies sponsor F-1 CPT visas in Ohio?
Ohio-based employers with histories of hiring F-1 CPT students in chemicals and materials include Sherwin-Williams and its global research center in Cleveland, Lubrizol in Wickliffe, and Avery Dennison's materials science operations in the state. Larger chemical distributors and specialty coatings firms also participate in CPT programs, particularly for students enrolled at nearby research universities such as Case Western Reserve, Ohio State, and the University of Akron.
Which cities in Ohio have the most chemicals & materials F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Cleveland leads due to its concentration of specialty chemicals and coatings companies, along with proximity to Case Western Reserve University. Akron has a long history in polymer science and materials, supported by the University of Akron's nationally ranked polymer program. Columbus offers opportunities tied to Ohio State University's research partnerships. Cincinnati also has a presence through consumer goods and specialty materials manufacturers operating in the greater metro area.
What types of chemicals & materials roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship?
Roles that commonly qualify for F-1 CPT in chemicals and materials include process engineering internships, R&D lab positions, materials testing and quality assurance roles, formulation chemistry internships, and environmental compliance support positions. Qualifying roles must be directly related to your enrolled academic program and require written authorization from your designated school official. Generic administrative or operations roles in a chemical company typically do not qualify for CPT authorization.

Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters jobs by visa type, including F-1 CPT, so you can search chemicals and materials roles in Ohio without manually screening each employer. Beyond Migrate Mate, your university's DSO office often maintains employer relationships with local chemical and materials firms that have previously hosted CPT students, making those contacts a practical starting point alongside your job search.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for F-1 CPT in the chemicals & materials industry?
Ohio's chemicals and materials sector often involves work at regulated facilities, including those handling hazardous materials or operating under EPA oversight. Some employers require background checks or facility access clearances before a CPT start date, which can affect your timeline. Ohio State, Case Western Reserve, and the University of Akron have dedicated international student offices experienced with CPT in technical industries, and coordinating early with your DSO is important given authorization processing times.
