Which aerospace & defense companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Ohio?
GE Aerospace, headquartered in Cincinnati, is one of Ohio's most active aerospace employers and has historically hired OPT candidates in engineering and technical roles. Other employers with Ohio aerospace operations include Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Technologies, and L3Harris, along with smaller defense contractors clustered around the Dayton area. OPT sponsorship varies by role, business unit, and hiring cycle, so confirming authorization support directly with each employer is important.
Which cities in Ohio have the most aerospace & defense F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Dayton leads the state for aerospace and defense hiring, driven by proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the defense contractors that support it. Cincinnati is a close second, anchored by GE Aerospace's global headquarters and its supplier network. Columbus also has a growing aerospace presence tied to defense research and logistics. Cleveland's advanced manufacturing base supports aerospace component production as well.
What types of aerospace & defense roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, avionics, propulsion, and software development are among the most common OPT-qualifying positions in Ohio's aerospace sector. Quality assurance engineers, materials scientists, and data analysts supporting defense programs also frequently appear in OPT-eligible job postings. These positions generally require a degree directly related to the role, which aligns with OPT's requirement that work be in a field consistent with your major.
How do I find aerospace & defense F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate aggregates aerospace and defense jobs in Ohio that are open to F-1 OPT candidates, letting you filter specifically by visa type and industry rather than sorting through postings that don't address sponsorship at all. Because Ohio's defense hiring is concentrated around a few major metros and contractors, Migrate Mate's state and industry filters help you quickly identify relevant openings at employers like GE Aerospace or defense contractors near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
Are there any Ohio-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in aerospace & defense?
Many defense contractor roles in Ohio require security clearances, which F-1 OPT holders are generally not eligible to obtain as non-U.S. persons. This can limit access to certain classified programs, even at employers who otherwise support OPT. Focusing on commercial aerospace divisions, unclassified research roles, or dual-use technology programs gives OPT candidates a broader set of accessible opportunities. Some universities near Dayton and Cincinnati also have research partnerships that support STEM OPT extensions.
