Which construction companies sponsor H-2B visas in Ohio?
Ohio-based contractors in roofing, masonry, concrete work, and landscaping construction have historically filed H-2B applications with the Department of Labor. Companies operating in Columbus's commercial development zone and Cincinnati's residential expansion corridors appear in DOL disclosure data as recurring H-2B filers. Sponsorship activity tends to come from mid-size specialty contractors rather than large general contractors, who more often use domestic labor pipelines.
Which cities in Ohio have the most construction H-2B sponsorship jobs?
Columbus leads H-2B construction activity in Ohio, driven by sustained commercial and residential development. Cleveland and Cincinnati follow, with demand tied to infrastructure rehabilitation and seasonal building projects. Smaller markets like Dayton and Akron also see periodic H-2B filings from regional roofing and site-preparation contractors, particularly during spring and summer peak seasons when temporary labor needs rise quickly.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-2B sponsorship?
H-2B construction roles are generally temporary, seasonal, or tied to a specific project with a defined end date. Common qualifying positions include roofing laborers, concrete finishers, masonry helpers, and site cleanup crews. The employer must demonstrate that U.S. workers are unavailable for the role and that the need is genuinely temporary. Skilled trades requiring licensure, such as electricians or plumbers, are less commonly sponsored under H-2B.
How do I find construction H-2B sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate lists H-2B construction jobs in Ohio filtered by visa type and industry, so you can search specifically for employers actively seeking sponsored workers rather than sorting through postings that don't apply to your situation. Because H-2B roles are time-sensitive and tied to seasonal hiring windows, checking Migrate Mate regularly during late fall and early winter gives you the best chance of connecting with Ohio contractors before their DOL application deadlines.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for H-2B construction sponsorship?
Ohio's construction season is strongly weather-driven, which shapes how employers structure H-2B petitions. Most filings target the April through October window, when outdoor work is viable. Ohio also sits within DOL's Chicago National Processing Center jurisdiction, which can affect processing timelines. Employers must attest to prevailing wage compliance under Ohio's applicable wage determinations, and workers should confirm the petition covers the full project duration before accepting a role.
What is the prevailing wage for H-2B construction jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
