Job Description
Summary
The Echocardiography Diagnostic Technologist performs complete echocardiographic examinations including M-mode, two-dimension and Doppler Echocardiography on clinical and/or research patients. Assists the Cardiologist, Fellows or other appropriate personnel in performing trans esophageal echocardiographic and stress echocardiographic examinations. He/she may also assist in coordinating efficient patient flow, staff assignments, educational support and highest quality procedures consistent with IAC standards for Echocardiography.
Job Duties
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson. (Do not delete, move or over-write this statement)
- Escorts patient from waiting area to examination room and reviews written history questionnaire. Explains nature of test to patient.
- Performs echocardiograms – 2D, M-mode, color Doppler according to department policy to comply with physician orders/standard of care.
- Performs trans-esophageal echocardiograms (TEE) on non-operative/intra-operative basis according to department policy to comply with physician orders/standard of care.
- Performs dobutamine stress echocardiograms (DSE), Stress Echocardiograms according to department policy to comply with physician orders/standards of care.
- Logs all pertinent patient/test data to ensure accurate billing/record keeping for the hospital and department.
- Monitors performance/repair of clinical equipment to ensure the quality of all testing and the safety of staff and internal/external customers.
- Maintains images in EHR.
- Cleans/disinfects/sterilizes clinical equipment to ensure staff and internal/external customer safety from pathogens.
- Participates in on call as per department policy. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED High School Diploma and completion of a two-year echocardiography training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or cardiovascular technology program accredited by the CAAHEP.
- Effective Communications - I0480 Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
- Accuracy and Attention to Detail - I0960 Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
- Heart Function Monitoring - THCD0180 Knowledge of the heart's major functions and activities, ability to detect heart arrhythmias, to recognize any emergency conditions in heart functioning and to assist physicians in emergency responses to heart irregularities.
- Cardiac Testing - THCD0190 Knowledge of and ability to use various equipment to examine the functioning and anatomy of the heart, following organizational protocols, in order to obtain accurate results for further diagnosis of heart disease.
- Echocardiogram Examination - THCD0240 Knowledge of the principles of echocardiography, ability to perform echocardiograms and other cardiac ultrasound procedures to attain effective diagnostic evaluations of the heart.
- Medical Record Keeping - THEM0050 Knowledge of processes and procedures for documenting patient information from in-take to archiving.
- Medical Equipment - THNU0340 Knowledge of the common types of equipment or devices used in the healthcare industry, and the ability to use these in patient care.
Additional Qualifications
- Registration by a national certification organization such as American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required.
Physical Demands
Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
