Which healthcare companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in South Carolina?
The largest healthcare employers in South Carolina with documented histories of hiring international graduates include Prisma Health, MUSC Health (Medical University of South Carolina), Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Bon Secours St. Francis, and AnMed Health. Academic medical centers like MUSC tend to have more established processes for supporting F-1 OPT workers, particularly in research, clinical support, and allied health positions.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most healthcare F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Columbia and Charleston account for the majority of healthcare F-1 OPT opportunities in South Carolina. Columbia is home to Prisma Health's flagship facilities and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Charleston hosts MUSC Health, one of the state's largest academic medical employers. Greenville is a growing market with Prisma Health Upstate and several specialty clinics actively hiring allied health and research professionals.
What types of healthcare roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that most commonly align with F-1 OPT in healthcare include clinical research coordinators, medical laboratory scientists, health informatics analysts, biomedical engineers, public health analysts, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Positions requiring a direct patient care license, such as physician roles, generally involve longer credentialing timelines that may not align with standard OPT duration. STEM OPT extension eligibility depends on whether the degree and role meet STEM field requirements.

Are there any state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in South Carolina healthcare?
South Carolina healthcare employers hiring F-1 OPT workers in clinical or licensed roles must account for state licensure requirements, which can add lead time before a graduate can begin work. For STEM OPT extensions (24 months beyond initial OPT), the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and the role must qualify under a STEM-designated field. MUSC and Prisma Health are both E-Verify participants, which is a prerequisite for STEM OPT eligibility.
