Which education companies and institutions sponsor F-1 OPT visas in South Dakota?
Public universities such as the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, and Dakota State University have established international hiring processes and regularly employ F-1 OPT holders in research, teaching, and administrative roles. Sioux Falls public schools and several tribal colleges affiliated with the Great Plains Tribal Colleges network have also hired international graduates. Private K-12 schools and education technology vendors operating statewide round out the employer pool.

Brookings is home to South Dakota State University and its affiliated research centers, making it a strong market for OPT holders in STEM education and research roles. Rapid City supports openings through the Rapid City Area Schools district and nearby tribal college affiliates. Vermillion, as the University of South Dakota's home city, offers a smaller but consistent pipeline of graduate-level positions.
What types of education roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that align directly with a degree field are the clearest fit for OPT. In education, this commonly includes instructional coordinators, education researchers, curriculum developers, academic advisors, and teaching assistants at the postsecondary level. STEM-designated degree holders working in educational technology, data analysis for school districts, or STEM instruction may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. The platform surfaces roles at universities, school districts, and education organizations that have documented OPT-compatible hiring. Filtering by the education sector and South Dakota location narrows results to institutions most likely to support your authorization period, including STEM OPT extension-eligible positions where applicable.
Are there any state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in South Dakota's education sector?
South Dakota's education sector has a notable tribal college presence, and institutions chartered under tribal authority may follow different administrative processes for international hiring than state-funded universities. Additionally, K-12 public teaching positions in South Dakota require a state-issued teaching certificate, which is a separate requirement from OPT work authorization and can affect timeline planning. Postsecondary and non-classroom education roles generally face fewer licensing barriers, making them more accessible entry points for OPT holders new to the state.
