Which automotive companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin employers with documented histories of OPT sponsorship in automotive and manufacturing include Johnson Controls, Oshkosh Corporation, Harley-Davidson, and Actuant Corporation. Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers operating in the Milwaukee and Racine metro areas also regularly hire OPT candidates for engineering and technical roles. Sponsorship availability varies by role, business cycle, and individual hiring manager, so confirming directly with each employer is important.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most automotive F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Milwaukee is the primary hub, with the largest concentration of automotive-adjacent manufacturing and engineering employers. Kenosha and Racine, both close to the Illinois border, host significant supplier and assembly operations. Appleton and the broader Fox Valley corridor are growing centers for advanced manufacturing, and Madison attracts automotive technology roles tied to university research partnerships with companies like Epic and smaller mobility-tech firms.
What types of automotive roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Wisconsin?
Roles that align most consistently with OPT eligibility requirements include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality assurance, supply chain management, and embedded systems development. These positions directly correspond to degree fields commonly held by F-1 students. Production supervisor and general operations roles may not qualify if they lack a direct tie to the student's field of study, which is a core OPT requirement.
How do I find automotive F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and visa-sponsored job seekers, and filters automotive roles in Wisconsin by visa type so you can avoid applying to positions where sponsorship is unavailable. Beyond Migrate Mate, attending Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Wisconsin section events and career fairs at UW-Madison or Milwaukee School of Engineering puts you in front of local employers who have established OPT hiring pipelines.
Are there any Wisconsin-specific considerations for F-1 OPT automotive sponsorship?
Wisconsin's manufacturing sector is heavily unionized in some facilities, which can affect how OPT candidates are hired and onboarded since union contracts occasionally govern hiring pools. Additionally, many Wisconsin automotive suppliers operate on project-based cycles tied to major OEM contracts, meaning OPT positions sometimes open suddenly and fill quickly. Students on STEM OPT extension should confirm that their specific role and employer meet the formal STEM OPT training plan requirements before accepting an offer.
