Lead with infrastructure scope, not just tools
Visa petitions for DevOps Managers must establish specialty occupation status. Emphasize architectural decision-making and team oversight rather than listing tools like Kubernetes or Terraform. USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires a degree.
Target companies with established H-1B track records
Large tech employers and cloud-native companies file H-1B petitions regularly and have internal immigration counsel. Smaller startups may want to sponsor but lack the infrastructure to execute it efficiently, which adds risk and delays to your timeline.
Clarify your degree field early in applications
Computer science, information systems, and software engineering degrees map cleanly to DevOps Manager roles. Degrees in unrelated fields raise specialty occupation questions. Address the connection explicitly in your resume before the employer raises it.
Use cap-exempt employers to avoid the H-1B lottery
Universities, research institutions, and affiliated nonprofits are cap-exempt. DevOps Managers are in demand at these organizations to manage research computing infrastructure. Cap-exempt roles let you bypass the lottery entirely and start immediately upon approval.
Document your leadership scope in concrete terms
USCIS and consular officers want evidence the role is managerial, not hands-on technical work rebranded. Include direct report counts, budget ownership, and cross-functional project leadership in your resume and any support letters from the employer.
Understand the LCA before your offer stage
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before your H-1B petition. This certifies wage and working condition compliance. Confirm your employer understands this requirement before you accept an offer contingent on sponsorship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DevOps Manager a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. DevOps Manager roles that combine infrastructure architecture, team leadership, and systems design typically qualify. Roles that are primarily operational or where any general degree suffices face more scrutiny. Your employer's job description needs to reflect the degree requirement clearly.
What visa types are available for DevOps Managers beyond H-1B?
The O-1A is an option if you have sustained recognition in your field, such as awards, published work, or a track record of managing infrastructure at significant scale. Australians can use the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and faster processing. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under the TN visa. L-1A is available if you're transferring within a multinational company in a managerial capacity.
Does my degree field matter for a DevOps Manager sponsorship?
Yes, significantly. Computer science, information systems, software engineering, and related technical degrees map well to this role. A business or general management degree is harder to defend for a DevOps-specific position. If your degree is in an unrelated field, your employer may need to document how your work experience compensates, or USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence questioning specialty occupation status.
Where can I find DevOps Manager jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this. The platform filters for roles that include visa sponsorship, so you're not sifting through postings that require existing authorization. DevOps Manager roles with H-1B visa sponsorship appear across enterprise tech, financial services, healthcare systems, and cloud infrastructure companies. Browsing by category on Migrate Mate surfaces active openings from employers with verified sponsorship intent.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B as a DevOps Manager?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, provided your current H-1B was previously approved and you've maintained valid status. Your new employer files a fresh Form I-129. The role at the new company must also qualify as a specialty occupation, so an unrelated or downgraded role could create complications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Devops Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
