Accounting Assistant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting assistant in Illinois?
Accounting assistant roles in Illinois do not require a state-issued license, but most employers expect at least an associate degree in accounting or a related business field. Community colleges such as Harper College, College of DuPage, and Oakton College offer Illinois-based programs aligned with local employer expectations. Earning a bookkeeping certificate or working toward a Certified Bookkeeper credential through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers strengthens a candidate's profile considerably with Illinois hiring managers.
Which companies hire accounting assistants in Illinois?
Companies currently hiring accounting assistants in Illinois include Continental, BORNQUIST, and Made To Measure, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's mix of Fortune 500 headquarters, regional healthcare systems, and midsize manufacturing firms creates consistent demand for accounting support staff across industries.
Which Illinois cities have the most accounting assistant jobs?
Chicago, Dundee, and Decatur have the most accounting assistant openings in Illinois. Chicago leads by a wide margin given its concentration of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, and large healthcare networks, while suburban markets like Naperville and Schaumburg draw openings from the many technology and professional services companies headquartered along the Interstate 88 corridor.
Are there remote accounting assistant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many office roles, since the work is largely screen-based and does not require handling physical materials on-site. About 29% of accounting assistant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader flexibility in corporate finance departments. Accounts payable processing, data entry, and invoice reconciliation are the tasks most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a accounting assistant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for accounts payable clerk or billing coordinator roles at Illinois hospital systems or large retailers, which regularly onboard candidates with only a community college degree or certificate. Advocate Health, AMITA Health, and Walgreens all run structured finance support programs that bring in entry-level staff. Lateral moves from administrative assistant or data entry roles are common. Completing a QuickBooks certification or the Certified Bookkeeper exam gives candidates a concrete credential that Illinois hiring managers recognize as a substitute for direct experience.
Where can I find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
