Accounting Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting assistant in New York?
Most accounting assistant positions in New York require at minimum an associate degree in accounting or a closely related business field, though a bachelor's degree is increasingly preferred by larger employers. New York does not require a state license specifically for accounting assistants, but earning a certification such as the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers credential strengthens your candidacy. Starting in accounts payable or payroll support at a mid-size firm is the most common entry path in the New York market.
Which companies hire accounting assistants in New York?
New York accounting assistant roles are posted by AIG, SLSCO, and Blossom and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's concentration of financial services firms, hospital networks, and large real estate companies means demand is spread across a wide range of industries rather than dominated by a single sector.
Which New York cities have the most accounting assistant jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Brooklyn have the most accounting assistant openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its density of corporate headquarters, financial institutions, and major healthcare systems, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent volume from regional employers, state government agencies, and university systems that maintain large administrative and finance departments.
Are there remote accounting assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable support roles. About 24% of accounting assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and software-driven nature of the work. Accounts payable and general ledger support positions are the most likely to be offered remotely, particularly at technology companies and financial services firms headquartered in the state.
How can I get hired as a accounting assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to accounts payable or billing coordinator roles at mid-size firms in New York City's financial district or at large healthcare systems like Mount Sinai or Northwell Health, which regularly bring on candidates with a degree but limited work history. Lateral moves from administrative assistant or data entry roles within a finance department are a common door-opener. Completing a QuickBooks certification or an accounting certificate through the City University of New York system gives candidates a concrete, verifiable edge in a competitive market.
Where can I find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your experience and location preference, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
