Accounting Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting assistant in New York?
Most accounting assistant roles in New York require at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field, with a bachelor's degree preferred by larger employers in the city's financial and healthcare sectors. New York does not require a state license for accounting assistants, but earning a bookkeeping certificate from a community college such as CUNY or SUNY strengthens your application considerably. Familiarity with New York State tax codes and payroll regulations is a practical advantage employers expect.
Which companies hire accounting assistants in New York?
Employers hiring accounting assistants in New York right now include Barclays, Blackstone, and Highgate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, hospital systems, and law firms means accounting assistant demand stays consistent well beyond the largest household names.
Which New York cities have the most accounting assistant jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Buffalo have the most accounting assistant openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its financial services sector, while Buffalo and Albany draw steady hiring from healthcare systems, state government agencies, and regional manufacturing companies that anchor those local economies.
Are there remote accounting assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since accounting assistant work is largely desk-based and document-driven. About 31% of accounting assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broader flexibility in the finance and professional services sectors. Accounts payable and data entry functions are the sub-areas most frequently offered on a remote or hybrid basis.
How can I get hired as a accounting assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable or billing clerk role at a mid-size firm in New York City or a regional healthcare network like Northwell Health or NewYork-Presbyterian, which regularly onboard candidates with only an associate degree. CUNY and SUNY campuses offer accounting certificate programs that New York employers recognize as practical preparation. Lateral moves from administrative assistant or data entry roles are common, and completing a QuickBooks certification gives candidates a concrete edge at the interview stage.
Where can I find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to accounting assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the ones that interest you.
