Tips for Your Asset Manager Job Search
Quantify performance against benchmarks explicitly
Hiring managers want AUM figures, returns relative to a benchmark, and risk-adjusted metrics on your resume. Replace vague phrases like 'managed portfolios' with concrete outcomes tied to specific mandates, asset classes, or fund strategies you oversaw.
Filter openings by asset class specialty
Asset manager roles vary widely by mandate, so real estate portfolio roles demand different credentials than fixed income or infrastructure positions. Narrow your search by asset class before applying so your cover letter and resume align tightly with what the team actually manages.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists asset manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight CFA progress on every application
Even if you're still in the exam process, noting your CFA candidacy level signals commitment to the profession. Many mid-level roles list it as preferred, and showing progress can move your application ahead of candidates who omit it entirely.
Prepare a case study before your interviews
Expect investment committees or hiring panels to ask you to walk through a real holding, a past buy or sell decision, or a hypothetical allocation. Practicing a structured investment thesis out loud before the interview rounds is what separates candidates at the final stage.
Negotiate using total compensation, not base alone
Asset management offers often include carried interest, performance bonuses, or co-investment rights that can dwarf base salary. Before accepting or countering, get clarity on vesting schedules and hurdle rates so you're comparing the full economics of competing offers.
Asset Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most asset managers?
The companies hiring the most asset managers right now include KPMG, Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, and AECOM, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is strongest at investment managers, REITs, insurance companies, and large institutional allocators.
How many asset manager jobs are remote?
About 30% of asset manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though full remote is more common at the analyst and associate level than in senior portfolio management roles. Client-facing and real assets positions tend to require in-office or on-site presence more than quantitative or research-focused ones.
How do you become an asset manager?
Start with a degree in finance, economics, or accounting, then build experience in investment analysis, financial modeling, or a related function like research or risk. Earning the CFA designation significantly strengthens your candidacy. Most people move into asset management through analyst roles at investment firms, banks, or insurance companies before advancing to portfolio management responsibilities.
Can you get an asset manager job with little experience?
Entry-level asset manager roles, typically titled analyst or associate, are accessible with a relevant degree and demonstrated quantitative skills. Internships at investment firms, asset owners, or wealth management practices are the most direct path. Building a sample investment thesis or completing the first CFA exam level can help differentiate your application when your work history is limited.
What does the asset manager interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two rounds with the hiring manager or investment team. Expect technical questions on portfolio construction, valuation, and risk metrics, and often a case study or stock pitch. Final rounds at larger firms may include a panel with senior portfolio managers or a presentation to a mock investment committee.
Where can I find and apply to asset manager jobs?
You can find and apply to asset manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your asset class focus, seniority level, and location preference, then apply directly to each one that fits.
