Asset Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a asset manager in Illinois?
Most asset manager roles in Illinois require a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field, followed by professional credentials that Illinois-based employers consistently expect. The CFA charter is the most recognized credential in Illinois institutional investment firms. Roles that involve providing investment advice to clients typically require a Series 65 or Series 66 license, administered through FINRA and registered with the Illinois Securities Department under the Illinois Securities Law.
Which companies hire asset managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring asset managers in Illinois right now include legalandgeneral, Stepan, and Northern Trust, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of insurance companies, pension funds, and independent investment advisors registered with the Illinois Securities Department makes it one of the more active states for asset management hiring outside of New York and California.
Which Illinois cities have the most asset manager jobs?
Chicago, Northbrook, and Gurnee have the most asset manager openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to the majority of the state's institutional investment firms, insurance headquarters, and bank trust departments, while Rosemont and Naperville draw openings from suburban corporate campuses and regional offices of firms that maintain a footprint outside the city center.
Are there remote asset manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many financial roles, since asset management work is largely analytical and desk-based. About 64% of asset manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the role's compatibility with distributed work arrangements. Portfolio analysis, client reporting, and research functions tend to be the most remote-eligible, while client-facing relationship management roles typically require regular in-person presence at Illinois offices.
How can I get hired as a asset manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior analyst or associate role at a Chicago-area wealth management firm, bank trust department, or insurance company investment division, where training is built into the position. Northern Trust, Nuveen, and large Illinois-based insurance carriers regularly hire associates out of undergraduate programs for portfolio support and operations roles. Earning the CFA Level I or completing the Series 65 exam before applying gives candidates a measurable edge, and a finance internship at an Illinois firm counts heavily in lieu of full-time experience.
Where can I find and apply to asset manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to asset manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that match.
