Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time 12 Month - AFT position, and days of work and hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Note: This position is in the “NL” category of employment (non-fixed work week) An AFT- NL professional staff member or librarian who is required to work beyond 35 hours shall be compensated through compensatory time off. Compensatory time shall be earned for hours worked beyond the normal work week, or on an employee’s regular day off, if requested and approved by their supervisor. This position will be required to work some evenings and/or weekends, as needed, in order to reach the broader college population with respect to programming and outreach. Occasional weekend/holiday work (e.g. First-Year Student Move-In Day) may be required.
JOB SUMMARY
Assist in the planning and management of the Office of Specialized Services (OSS). Supervise the assistive technology and accommodation services of OSS. Serve as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for the Accessible Information Management (AIM). Responsible for the implementation of support services for students within OSS. Develop appropriate, individualized prescriptive techniques necessary to enhance the likelihood of academic success, including diagnostic evaluation, modified testing, adaptive equipment, educational materials, tutorial support, and other services. Liaison and consultant to faculty regarding students' abilities and functional limitations in order to develop optimal teaching strategies and academic accommodations. Advocate for full participation in all college activities by students with disabilities. Maintenance of student records in accordance with College and grant requirements.
DUTIES
- Assist in the planning and management of OSS by developing and recommending goals, policies, and procedures with particular focus on assistive technology and accommodation services (i.e. testing, classroom academic aides, and note takers).
- Coordinated OSS accommodated testing operations in collaboration with the College’s Testing Center to ensure seamless implementation of specialized testing environments and compliance with accessibility standards.
- Serve as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for the Accessible Information Management (AIM) (a.k.a. OSSOnline) platform. This includes auditing system data for accuracy, managing user permissions, and spearheading the integration of OSSOnline workflows to streamline departmental operations.
- Develops and recommends plans for program promotion, assessment, and improvements in the areas of assistive technology and accommodation services.
- Supervise the Accommodation Specialist Graduate Assistant in the provision of accommodated testing.
- Supervise Student Assistive Technology Specialists in acquiring or production of alternative media (audio books) and training/supporting student in the use of technologies.
- Oversees the acquisition, distribution, and inventory of OSS assistive technologies.
- Provide specialized counseling and advisement to students regarding academic and academically related issues, specifically those related to disabilities.
- Coordinate all academic services for assigned caseload, including alternate testing, utilization of reader, scribe and/or note-taker services, and tutorial assistance.
- Administers and interprets applicable laws regarding disability accommodations and access.
- Consults with the director to resolve unusual problems or policy concerns evolving related to technology, accommodations, and equal access.
- Consult with faculty and staff regarding disability related issues. Advise faculty regarding appropriate classroom and testing accommodations.
- Participates in meetings and college events related to job responsibilities.
- Develop and conduct training workshops or seminars for students, faculty and staff of the college as well as outside agencies and programs as requested.
- Assist the Director in developing and preparing grant applications.
- Prepare and conduct assessment activities associated with the office.
- Serve in the Director’s stead.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Master’s Degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, or related field.
Experience
- Knowledge of disabilities and their effects on the ability to participate in a college environment.
- Knowledge of appropriate academic adjustments, including adaptive equipment necessary for adequate academic performance.
- Knowledge of appropriate academic accommodation in order to provide equal access to college programs.
- Required knowledge of common adaptive technologies such as JAWS, Zoomtext, Kurzweil, and Livescribe pens.
- At least 5 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities at post-secondary level.
- At least 2 years of experience working with AIM that include the launching or redevelopment of specific modules.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Demonstrated skills in interpersonal relations, oral and written communication, and organization.
- Ability to work in a college campus environment and with great attention to detail; the ability to maintain appropriate professional confidentiality.
- Must be able to use office systems and software effectively: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Starfish (Connect), Banner, AIM, e-mail, and voice mail.
- Able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
