Bookkeeper Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in Iowa?
Iowa does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path starts with at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field from a community college such as Des Moines Area Community College or Kirkwood Community College. From there, employers look for hands-on software experience and a demonstrated ability to manage full-cycle books. Earning a nationally recognized credential like the AIPB Certified Bookkeeper designation strengthens your candidacy considerably with Iowa employers.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring bookkeepers in Iowa include Marsh, Hy-Vee, and Transamerica, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's deep concentration of agricultural cooperatives, regional healthcare networks, and insurance and financial services firms makes it one of the more consistent states for steady bookkeeping demand throughout the year.
Which Iowa cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque have the most bookkeeper openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the largest share thanks to its density of insurance carriers, financial services firms, and corporate headquarters, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport contribute consistently because of their manufacturing bases and regional healthcare systems that require dedicated accounting support.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 46% of bookkeeper openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and software-driven nature of the work. The tasks most likely to be fully remote are accounts-payable entry, bank reconciliations, and payroll processing, while roles requiring physical document handling or on-site client collaboration tend to stay in-office.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts-payable or accounts-receivable clerk role, which large Iowa employers such as regional healthcare systems, agricultural cooperatives, and manufacturing firms hire for regularly without requiring prior bookkeeping experience. Community colleges like Des Moines Area Community College offer short accounting certificate programs that make candidates immediately competitive. Completing a QuickBooks certification before applying gives you a measurable edge over other entry-level candidates in the Iowa market.
