Category Manager Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a category manager in Texas?
Most category managers in Texas start with a bachelor's degree in business administration, supply chain management, or a related field, then move into buying or procurement analyst roles to build hands-on experience. Texas does not require a state-issued license for this role. Earning a Certified Professional in Supply Management or a Certified Supply Chain Professional credential strengthens candidacy significantly, and many Texas employers in energy, retail, and healthcare list them as preferred.
How much do category managers make in Texas?
Category managers in Texas earn a median of about $134,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $86,340 for the lowest 10% to over $212,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire category managers in Texas?
Employers hiring category managers in Texas right now include Amazon, Nouryon, and 7-Eleven, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major retail chains, and energy companies makes it one of the more active states for category management hiring year-round.
Which Texas cities have the most category manager jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas have the most category manager openings in Texas. Houston leads due to its large energy, chemicals, and healthcare procurement operations, Dallas follows as a retail and logistics hub anchored by major corporate headquarters, and Austin's fast-growing technology sector drives consistent demand for indirect and technology category managers.
Are there remote category manager jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many similar roles, since category management is largely analytical and negotiation-based work that can be done effectively without being on-site. About 11% of category manager openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of the work. Indirect procurement and technology category roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while food, retail, and manufacturing categories more often require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a category manager in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a procurement analyst, junior buyer, or sourcing coordinator, roles that Texas employers like H-E-B, Dell Technologies, and large Houston-area energy companies hire into regularly at the associate level. Retail and consumer goods companies in Dallas often run structured buyer development programs that rotate candidates through categories. Building a portfolio of supplier analysis projects and earning a foundational supply chain credential gives candidates a clear edge when applying to these entry roles.
