Category Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a category manager in New York?
Most category managers in New York enter the role through a bachelor's degree in business, supply chain management, or a related field, followed by experience in buying, procurement, or merchandising. No state-issued license is required, but credentials such as the Certified Professional in Supply Management or Certified Supply Chain Professional strengthen candidacy. New York employers, particularly in retail and financial services, favor candidates with direct vendor negotiation experience or a background in adjacent roles like buyer, sourcing analyst, or merchandise planner.
How much do category managers make in New York?
Category managers in New York earn a median of about $166,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,800 for the lowest 10% to over $282,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire category managers in New York?
Employers hiring category managers in New York right now include TikTok, Micron Technology, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major retail headquarters, financial institutions, and consumer goods companies makes it one of the deepest markets for this role in the country.
Which New York cities have the most category manager jobs?
New York, Clay, and Bronx have the most category manager openings in New York. New York City dominates because it is home to the headquarters of major retailers, banks, and consumer brands that maintain large procurement teams, while White Plains and Buffalo attract openings tied to regional distribution operations and healthcare system sourcing departments.
Are there remote category manager jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles. About 12% of category manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the analytical and strategic nature of the work. The tasks most likely to be fully remote are supplier analysis, contract review, and assortment planning, while vendor negotiation and cross-functional meetings often require at least occasional in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a category manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a buyer's assistant, junior buyer, or sourcing coordinator role at a New York retailer or healthcare system, then moving into category management after building vendor and data experience. Large New York employers such as Macy's and major regional health systems run rotational or associate buyer programs that function as direct pipelines into category roles. Completing a Certified Professional in Supply Management credential early signals seriousness to hiring teams and separates candidates who lack years of direct experience.
Where can I find and apply to category manager jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to category manager jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find ones that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
