Category Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a category manager in Virginia?
Most category manager roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field. Virginia does not issue a state-specific license for this role, but employers strongly favor candidates who hold the Certified Professional in Supply Management credential from the Institute for Supply Management or the Certified Supply Chain Professional designation. Building experience in procurement, vendor management, or purchasing analyst roles is the most common path into category management in Virginia.
How much do category managers make in Virginia?
Category managers in Virginia earn a median of about $166,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $109,270 for the lowest 10% to over $222,230 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire category managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring category managers in Virginia right now include Amazon, US Foods, and Truist, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors and technology firms in the Northern Virginia corridor means procurement and category roles tend to open frequently and require familiarity with both commercial and government acquisition environments.
Which Virginia cities have the most category manager jobs?
Arlington, Richmond, and Manassas have the most category manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's dense cluster of federal agencies and large defense contractors drives the highest volume, while Richmond's corporate headquarters and retail distribution operations and Virginia Beach's logistics and government contracting presence account for strong hiring in those markets as well.
Are there remote category manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many other procurement roles, because category management centers on analysis, supplier communication, and strategy work that translates well to remote settings. About 57% of category manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader flexibility in the field. Strategic sourcing and spend analysis tasks are most likely to be offered remotely, while supplier site visits and contract negotiations often require some in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a category manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a purchasing analyst, procurement coordinator, or buying assistant role with a Virginia federal contractor or large retailer. Organizations such as Booz Allen Hamilton, DXC Technology, and Leidos regularly bring on early-career talent in procurement operations before moving them into category responsibilities. Completing a Certified Professional in Supply Management certification while in an entry role, or gaining exposure to contract administration in a support function, meaningfully strengthens a candidate's profile for the step up.
Where can I find and apply to category manager jobs in Virginia?
