Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in Maryland?
You qualify for civil engineering intern roles in Maryland by pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Most employers expect you to be in your sophomore year or later. Earning the Engineer in Training credential by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, administered through the Maryland Board for Professional Engineers, strengthens your candidacy and is a recognized milestone for interns on a licensure track.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Maryland?
Maryland civil engineering intern roles are posted by Kleinfelder, Bohler, and Kimley-Horn and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maryland's volume of federal agency work and state transportation projects draws a broad mix of large national engineering firms and regional consultants that hire interns on a recurring annual basis.
Which Maryland cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
Baltimore, Hunt Valley, and Bowie have the most civil engineering intern openings in Maryland. Baltimore drives volume through its port infrastructure, transit projects, and proximity to major consultancies, while the D.C. suburbs of Rockville and Greenbelt attract interns through federal agencies and their prime contractors, and Annapolis benefits from state government offices and Chesapeake Bay environmental engineering work.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they are rare. Civil engineering internships are predominantly hands-on, requiring site visits, field measurements, and in-office CAD work, which limits remote options significantly. About 61% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to involve data analysis, report writing, or GIS-based tasks that can be completed off-site.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured internship programs run by the Maryland State Highway Administration and large regional consultancies like Whitman, Requardt and Associates, which recruit early-year students with no prior experience. Pursuing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a portfolio of coursework projects in AutoCAD or Civil 3D gives you a concrete edge. Campus recruiting events at the University of Maryland and Morgan State University also connect students directly with Maryland employers actively seeking interns without field history.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in the state. Search the roles available, identify the ones that match your program year and skills, and apply directly to whichever positions fit your background.
