Civil Project Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil project manager in Maryland?
The standard path in Maryland starts with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or construction management, followed by field experience and licensure through the Maryland State Board of Professional Engineers, which administers the PE exam. Most Maryland employers expect candidates to hold or be actively pursuing a PE license, and many require the Project Management Professional credential as well. Gaining early experience on state or county infrastructure contracts accelerates the path to a project manager title.
How much do civil project managers make in Maryland?
Civil project managers in Maryland earn a median of about $104,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,890 for the lowest 10% to over $167,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil project managers in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring civil project managers in Maryland include Bohler, Dewberry, and Beitzel Corporation, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal facilities, transit programs, and state highway work means large engineering and construction firms with long-term government contracts are consistently among the most active employers.
Which Maryland cities have the most civil project manager jobs?
The cities with the most civil project manager openings in Maryland are Lanham, Baltimore, and Bowie. Baltimore anchors hiring through its port, water utility, and highway rehabilitation programs, while the D.C.-area suburbs in Montgomery and Prince George's counties generate consistent demand tied to federal agency campuses, the Purple Line, and the I-270 managed lanes project driving work across those corridors.
Are there remote civil project manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil project management is fundamentally a field-oriented role requiring regular site visits, contractor coordination, and on-site oversight, which limits full remote arrangements. About 60% of civil project manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to involve planning, grant administration, or program management work rather than active construction oversight.
How can I get hired as a civil project manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an engineer-in-training or project engineer role with a Maryland state agency or a large infrastructure firm. The Maryland State Highway Administration and the Maryland Transit Administration both bring on entry-level engineers who work alongside licensed project managers on active contracts. Firms such as AECOM and Jacobs run structured associate engineer programs in their Maryland offices. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and building field exposure on transportation or utility projects gives candidates a clear edge when applying for a first PM role.
Where can I find and apply to civil project manager jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to civil project manager jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings across infrastructure, transportation, and facilities sectors. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly through the listings.
