Civil Project Manager Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil project manager in Michigan?
Most civil project managers in Michigan start with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or construction management, then gain field experience before moving into project leadership. Licensure as a Professional Engineer through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, which administers the NCEES PE exam, is required for signing off on designs at many firms and public agencies. A PMP credential strengthens the path for those managing larger programs or working directly with municipal clients.
How much do civil project managers make in Michigan?
Civil project managers in Michigan earn a median of about $100,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,980 for the lowest 10% to over $154,260 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil project managers in Michigan?
Companies currently hiring civil project managers in Michigan include SME, Jobot, and Fleis & VandenBrink, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's ongoing investment in road reconstruction, water infrastructure, and brownfield redevelopment keeps demand from both private engineering consultancies and public sector clients steady throughout the year.
Which Michigan cities have the most civil project manager jobs?
Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Kalamazoo account for the largest share of civil project manager openings in Michigan. Detroit drives volume through major transportation, utility, and urban redevelopment programs, while Grand Rapids reflects strong private-sector growth in commercial and industrial site development, and Lansing concentrates work tied to state agency projects and MDOT contracts.
Are there remote civil project manager jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil project management is fundamentally a site-present role, requiring regular visits to active construction and infrastructure projects. About 38% of civil project manager openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and most of those hybrid arrangements apply to the planning, design coordination, and reporting phases of a project rather than active field supervision.
How can I get hired as a civil project manager in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a project engineer or assistant project manager role at a Michigan-based civil engineering consultancy, where you support senior PMs on active MDOT, municipal, or private development contracts. Firms like Fishbeck, Hubbell Roth and Clark, and Spalding DeDecker regularly bring on new graduates from Michigan civil and construction programs. Building toward your EIT credential through LARA immediately after graduation and gaining MDOT field inspection experience are the two steps that most reliably accelerate the move into full project management responsibility.
Where can I find and apply to civil project manager jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to civil project manager jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and the type of projects you want to work on, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
