Communications Manager Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a communications manager in Ohio?
Most communications manager roles in Ohio require a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing, followed by several years of progressively responsible experience. Ohio does not issue a state license for communications managers, so employers screen primarily on portfolio, measurable campaign results, and experience managing teams or agencies. Credentials like the Accreditation in Public Relations, offered through the Public Relations Society of America, strengthen candidacy for senior roles at Ohio's major corporations and institutions.
Which companies hire communications managers in Ohio?
Employers hiring communications managers in Ohio right now include SJE, Copeland, and Milacron, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Ohio's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large health systems, and major universities creates steady demand for communications professionals at both the manager and director level.
Which Ohio cities have the most communications manager jobs?
Columbus, Akron, and Sidney have the most communications manager openings in Ohio. Columbus leads because of its density of corporate headquarters, state government agencies, and large nonprofit organizations, while Cleveland's healthcare and financial services sectors and Cincinnati's consumer goods and media companies drive consistent openings in those metros.
Are there remote communications manager jobs in Ohio?
Yes, and more than most fields. Communications manager work is largely desk-based and project-driven, making it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 50% of communications manager openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly Ohio employers have adopted flexible work for this role. Writing, media monitoring, and digital content duties tend to be the most fully remote, while executive advising and event coordination roles typically require regular on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a communications manager in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a communications coordinator or public relations specialist role at a large Ohio employer, then advancing internally. Cleveland Clinic, OhioHealth, and Columbus-area nonprofits regularly bring on communications associates and PR coordinators without requiring management experience. Building a writing portfolio through freelance work, campus publications, or volunteer PR for Ohio-based nonprofits significantly strengthens early applications, and the Accreditation in Public Relations designation signals professionalism to hiring managers evaluating candidates with shorter work histories.
Where can I find and apply to communications manager jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to communications manager jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current Ohio openings. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
