INTRODUCTION
Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Checkout Product team is at the heart of this mission—powering Affirm’s core payment experience, frequently seen at merchant point of sale. This experience is distributed through direct merchant integrations and strategic platform partners, and is driven by a sophisticated, real-time, risk-based decisioning system spanning Identity, Fraud, Credit, and Pricing. We are looking for a Senior Director of Consumer Risk product to lead this critical surface area within Checkout. In this role, you will own the product vision, strategy, and execution across Credit, Pricing, and Fraud, enabling Affirm to grow responsibly while delivering best-in-class consumer and merchant experiences. Affirm’s proprietary underwriting is one of our greatest strengths. We only make money when consumers pay us back on time—aligning incentives and fundamentally reimagining how credit should work. As the leader of Consumer Risk product, you will help scale and evolve this system, balancing customer trust, merchant performance, and long-term business outcomes. This is a highly cross-functional, analytically rigorous, and commercially impactful role. You will lead and scale a team of Product Managers, partner deeply with Engineering, Machine Learning, Analytics, Risk, Finance, Legal, Design, and GTM teams, and influence senior leaders across the company.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the end-to-end product vision, strategy, and execution for Consumer Risk within Checkout, encompassing Credit decisioning, Pricing, and Fraud prevention
- Translate Affirm’s mission into a clear product roadmap that balances growth, risk, customer trust, and platform scalability
- Lead and scale a team of Product Managers owning distinct Consumer Risk surface areas, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and high performance
- Partner closely with Machine Learning, Analytics and Engineering to shape model-driven product experiences, including underwriting logic, pricing frameworks, fraud signals, and decisioning platforms
- Drive quantitative storytelling—using data, experiments, and modeling to inform strategy, influence stakeholders, and guide tradeoffs
- Champion a customer-first mindset, ensuring risk experiences are transparent, fair, and intuitive for consumers while delivering strong outcomes for merchants
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Design, Marketing, and GTM teams to deliver cohesive, scalable solutions
- Set and own key performance metrics (e.g., approval rate, conversion, loss rate, unit economics, LTV, fraud outcomes, customer trust metrics) and hold teams accountable to results
- Navigate complex organizational dynamics and influence senior stakeholders, including the executive team, with clear articulation of strategy, tradeoffs, and impact
- Balance near-term execution with long-term platform investments, ensuring Consumer Risk capabilities scale with Affirm’s growth and partner ecosystem
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 12+ years of Product Management experience, including leadership roles on fast-paced teams driving responsible, sustainable growth
- Deep experience working with Credit, Pricing, and/or Fraud stakeholders, with a strong understanding of:
- Credit: underwriting tradeoffs, unit economics, loss management, regulatory considerations
- Pricing: risk-based pricing, margin optimization, experimentation, and fairness considerations
- Fraud: adversarial systems, real-time decisioning, false positive/negative tradeoffs, and customer trust
- Strong quantitative and analytical orientation—comfortable engaging in model-level discussions, using data to drive decisions, and translating complexity into clear narratives
- Experience building and scaling platform and decisioning products, not just surface-level UX
- Proven track record of managing and mentoring large, geographically distributed PM teams
- Commercially minded with a high-agency, bias-to-action mindset and comfort making hard tradeoffs in ambiguous environments
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across functions and levels
- Experience working in design-forward organizations that prioritize clarity, transparency, and high-quality user experiences
- A systems thinker who can balance short-term business impact with long-term scalability and technical health
- Fintech, payments, or risk-heavy consumer product experience is a strong plus
COMPENSATION

Align your portfolio with fintech infrastructure
Affirm's Development Directors own engineering delivery for payment and lending products. Before applying, frame your experience around managing distributed systems, compliance-sensitive codebases, or platform scalability rather than general software leadership.
Confirm LCA coverage before your interview
Affirm files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before any H-1B petition. Ask your recruiter early which prevailing wage level the role is posted under, so your salary expectations align before you reach the offer stage.
Identify roles with explicit sponsorship language
Not every Development Director opening at Affirm will flag sponsorship availability the same way. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Affirm roles that support H-1B, F-1 OPT, or TN so you only target positions where your visa situation fits.
Negotiate start date around H-1B cap deadlines
Cap-subject H-1B employment can't begin before October 1 of the fiscal year the petition was filed for. If you receive an offer in the spring, clarify with Affirm whether your role can hold until that start date or requires a different visa pathway.

Find Development Director at Affirm JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Affirm sponsor H-1B visas for Development Directors?
Yes, Affirm sponsors H-1B visas for Development Director roles. The process requires Affirm to file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting an H-1B petition to USCIS. If the role is cap-subject, timing your application around the annual H-1B lottery window is essential, so engage Affirm's recruiting team early to understand where your candidacy stands.
Which visa types are commonly used for Development Director roles at Affirm?
H-1B is the most common pathway for Development Directors at Affirm, given the specialty occupation requirements of the role. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for recent graduates entering the function, and TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering management roles. Affirm also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for candidates pursuing permanent residency.
What qualifications or experience does Affirm expect for Development Director roles?
Affirm typically looks for experience leading engineering teams building large-scale financial or consumer technology products. A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field is generally required to satisfy H-1B specialty occupation standards. Demonstrated ownership of platform reliability, cross-functional delivery, and compliance-sensitive product development is particularly relevant given Affirm's position in regulated consumer finance.
How do I apply for Development Director jobs at Affirm?
Browse active Development Director openings at Affirm through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship so you can confirm your situation is supported before applying. When you apply, tailor your materials to Affirm's fintech context and be direct with the recruiter about your visa type and timeline early in the process, since sponsorship logistics affect offer structuring.
How do I plan my timeline when Affirm is sponsoring my H-1B petition?
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date, so coordinating your offer timeline around that window matters. If your OPT authorization runs out before October 1, the cap-gap provision may extend your work authorization automatically. For cap-exempt scenarios, USCIS can begin processing immediately, and premium processing reduces the adjudication window to 15 business days.
