Build a portfolio showing systems-level thinking
Apple's Design Engineer interviews assess how you approach constraints across mechanical, thermal, and materials domains simultaneously. Document projects where you resolved competing engineering requirements, not just ones that showcase a single discipline.
Target roles aligned with your degree field
For H-1B eligibility, your degree must directly relate to the role. Apple's Design Engineer positions often require mechanical, electrical, or materials engineering specifically, so apply to postings that match your academic background to avoid a specialty occupation challenge.
Understand how Apple structures LCA wage levels
Apple files Labor Condition Applications with DOL before your H-1B petition. Design Engineer roles at Apple typically land at Wage Level III or IV on the prevailing wage scale. Knowing this helps you evaluate whether an offer reflects your seniority correctly.
Verify your Australian degree equivalency early
E-3 visa eligibility requires a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in the relevant field. Australian three-year engineering degrees are generally accepted, but get a credential evaluation before your interview to avoid delays at the consulate.
Browse open Design Engineer roles on Migrate Mate
Apple posts Design Engineer positions across hardware, product design, and industrial systems teams at different times of year. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Apple roles that explicitly support visa sponsorship so you're applying where a pathway already exists.

Find Design Engineer at Apple JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Design Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Design Engineers. The process starts with Apple filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, followed by an H-1B petition to USCIS on your behalf. Because H-1B is subject to an annual cap and lottery, timing your offer and start date around the April filing window is critical for this pathway.
How do I apply for Design Engineer jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers site or browse open roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions with active visa sponsorship. Apple's Design Engineer hiring process typically includes a recruiter screen, technical phone interviews covering engineering fundamentals and systems design, and an onsite loop. Having a hardware portfolio or project documentation ready before your first conversation strengthens your candidacy.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Design Engineer roles?
Apple supports several visa categories for Design Engineers depending on your background and nationality. F-1 OPT and CPT are common entry points for recent graduates. H-1B is the primary long-term work visa for most nationalities. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3, which has no lottery and is faster to process. TN visas are available for qualified Canadian and Mexican engineers. Apple also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for longer-term employees.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Design Engineer roles?
Apple's Design Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with CAD tools, manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis is expected. Roles on Apple's product teams often favor candidates with experience in consumer electronics, where miniaturization and precision tolerances are central constraints rather than secondary considerations.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Design Engineer at Apple?
Timeline depends on visa type. E-3 consular processing for Australian applicants typically takes two to four weeks from application to approval. H-1B sponsorship requires USCIS lottery selection in April, with employment starting no earlier than October 1. USCIS premium processing is available for H-1B petitions and returns a decision within 15 business days. Green Card sponsorship through PERM can take several years depending on your country of birth and priority date.
